Setting up the Front Page
Before you begin to customize your theme according to your desires, you need to set up a front page.
Go to appearance.
Click on Customize.

Then on the options that appears, click on Home Page Settings.

Click on A Static Page below the Front Page Displays.
Click on the Dropdown below the Front Page and select the page that you want to set as front page.

Then Click Save & Publish.

Go to page editor, from your dashboard Pages>> All pages, and select the the front page to edit.

Then on the Template drop down on your right, select Front Page template.

Then click update to save your changes.
